What is fat pad atrophy?
It is believed that the average person with an eighty year old life span will walk the distance of the world twice in their lifetime. The foot is comprised of specialized fat pads to provide shock absorption and protection against sheering, compressive and pivoting forces during the gait cycle. Fat pad degradation and displacement in the foot are common, and the cause of callus formation and pain. With all the walking humans do, foot fat pad breakdown is inevitable. Certain foot conditions, however, cause fat pad breakdown to occur at a much faster rate. Fat grafting to the foot may be a potential treatment option to help alleviate pain in the foot due to abnormal fat pad breakdown. Fat grafting involves using one’s own fat cells from their abdomen or thighs and transplanting them into the painful area in the foot that has lost its cushion. By replacing the fat pad cushion, this may limit shoe gear irritation, excessive pressure when standing on an area, and provide much needed relief to aching feet. In addition, since one’s own fat cells are being used, there is minimal chance of an allergic reaction or rejection of the tissue.
